Pennsylvania is home to one of the oldest and most celebrated Amish settlements in North America, with roots stretching back to the 1720s when Swiss-German Anabaptist immigrants first established communities in Lancaster County. Today, Lancaster County alone hosts roughly 40,000 Old Order Amish — the largest single Amish community in the world — making it the definitive destination for anyone seeking an authentic encounter with Amish culture, craftsmanship, and commerce.
What sets Pennsylvania's Amish country apart is the sheer depth of the visitor experience combined with centuries of unbroken tradition. Lancaster County's Old Order Amish communities have maintained horse-and-buggy travel, oil lamp interiors, and German dialect speech since long before neighboring settlements were established. The county has developed a mature network of Amish-owned businesses — bulk food stores, quilt shops, furniture workshops, and farmers markets.
Beyond Lancaster, Pennsylvania harbors several lesser-known but equally authentic Amish settlements scattered across the state's rural interior, including Kishacoquillas Valley (Big Valley) in Mifflin County, New Wilmington in Lawrence County, and growing communities in Somerset and Indiana counties.
Lancaster County's communities around Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Strasburg, and Gordonville are predominantly Old Order Amish. Roughly 200 miles northwest, Kishacoquillas Valley in Mifflin County — locally called Big Valley — is one of the most theologically diverse Amish settlements in the country, where three distinct affiliations coexist: the Nebraska Amish (white-topped buggies), the Byler Amish (yellow-topped buggies), and the Renno Amish (black-topped buggies), making Big Valley a living illustration of how Amish practice evolves through generations.
Lawrence County's New Wilmington settlement (established 1840s) is known for high-quality quilts and woodworking. Somerset County in the southwest has a growing Old Order community producing excellent maple products, furniture, and baked goods with far less tourist traffic than Lancaster.
Late September through October is the single best window to visit Pennsylvania Amish country — fall foliage peaks, harvest season fills roadside stands with sweet corn, pumpkins, and apple cider. Summer brings the fullest farmers market activity but also the heaviest tourist traffic in Lancaster County, particularly on weekends. Avoid Lancaster County on summer holiday weekends. All Amish-owned businesses are closed on Sundays without exception.
Photography is the most important etiquette issue in Pennsylvania Amish country. Lancaster County Amish are among the most emphatic in the country about it — most Old Order Amish here consider being photographed a violation of religious principle. Do not photograph people, buggies with occupants, or farmyards without explicit permission. Prices at Amish-run stores are typically fair and non-negotiable; haggling is not part of the culture here.

View all Pennsylvania listingsBird-in-Hand, Intercourse, and Strasburg in Lancaster County have the highest concentration of Amish stores in Pennsylvania. Bird-in-Hand alone has a well-known farmers market, multiple quilt shops, and numerous roadside produce stands. Outside Lancaster County, New Wilmington in Lawrence County and Belleville in Mifflin County (the hub for Big Valley) are the next most productive destinations for Amish goods.
No — Pennsylvania has at least a dozen distinct Amish settlements. Significant communities exist in Mifflin County (Big Valley), Lawrence County (New Wilmington), Somerset County, Indiana County, and Clinton County. Big Valley is particularly worth visiting to see three distinct Amish affiliations — identifiable by buggy top color — farming the same valley floor.
Quilts are the signature purchase in Lancaster County — hand-stitched in traditional patterns and significantly cheaper bought directly from an Amish farm than through a retailer. Shoofly pie, whoopie pies, and Lebanon bologna are essential food stops. Bulk dry goods stores sell baking mixes, dried beans, spices, and specialty flours at prices well below grocery chain rates. Hardwood furniture in walnut and cherry represents excellent value when purchased directly from an Amish workshop.
Lancaster County is approximately 65–75 miles west of Philadelphia. Driving via the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) to Route 222 south takes roughly 75–90 minutes in normal traffic. Amtrak's Keystone Service connects Philadelphia's 30th Street Station to Lancaster city in about 70 minutes — from there, a car rental or rideshare is needed to reach rural communities.
