Ohio is home to the largest Amish population in the United States, with approximately 80,000 Old Order Amish living across more than a dozen counties. The first Amish settlers arrived in Wayne and Holmes counties in the early 1800s, drawn by affordable farmland and the religious freedom the young nation offered. By the mid-19th century, Holmes County had become the undisputed center of Amish life in America, a distinction it holds to this day. The rolling hills of northeastern Ohio proved ideal for small-scale farming and the self-sufficient agricultural life the Amish sought.
The Holmes County settlement, which spills into portions of Wayne, Coshocton, Tuscarawas, and Stark counties, is often called the single largest contiguous Amish settlement anywhere in the world. To the south, Tuscarawas County hosts a distinct community of Swiss Amish — descendants of immigrants from the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland — who settled around Sugarcreek and Dover in the late 1800s. Smaller but historically significant settlements also exist in Geauga County in northeastern Ohio, dating to the 1880s.
Today, Ohio Amish country draws millions of visitors annually, yet large swaths of the region remain working farmland where horse-drawn equipment is an everyday reality, not a tourist attraction. The combination of deep historical roots, diverse sub-communities, and a thriving artisan economy makes Ohio the definitive destination for anyone seeking authentic Amish goods, food, and craftsmanship.
Holmes County is the gravitational center of Ohio Amish life, with towns like Berlin, Millersburg, Walnut Creek, and Charm serving as hubs for both residents and visitors. Berlin has become a commercial focal point, hosting furniture showrooms, bulk food stores, and specialty shops. Old Order Amish use horse-drawn transportation and shun grid electricity, while more conservative Swartzentruber Amish live under stricter Ordnung rules, foregoing indoor plumbing and reflective safety triangles on their buggies.
Geauga County's Amish community, centered around Middlefield and Parkman, is known for maple syrup production, cheese making, and furniture. The Swiss Amish of Sugarcreek are recognized for their distinctive yodeling tradition, Swiss-style architecture, and a slightly more entrepreneurial approach to retail that includes the famous Sugarcreek Budget newspaper, a national clearinghouse for Amish community news.
Late spring through early fall is when Ohio Amish country operates at full capacity. Fall is arguably the single best time to visit: apple butter festivals, the Sugarcreek Ohio Swiss Festival in late September, harvest produce, and freshly pressed cider fill roadside stands. Winter sees reduced hours and some seasonal stands close December through March. Spring brings maple syrup season in Geauga County. Virtually all Amish businesses close on Sundays — plan your visit for Tuesday through Saturday.
Visitors to Ohio Amish country are guests in a working religious community, not a theme park. Photography is the most common source of friction: Old Order Amish generally object to having their faces photographed on theological grounds, so always ask before pointing a camera at people. Cash is both practical and preferred; haggling is not a norm in established shops. Modest dress is appreciated in more conservative areas.

View all Ohio listingsThe densest concentration is in the Holmes County Settlement, along State Route 39 between Millersburg and Sugarcreek. The towns of Berlin, Walnut Creek, and Charm each have clusters of furniture shops, bakeries, bulk food stores, and craft retailers. Berlin is the most commercially developed. For a less tourist-heavy experience, the roads between Charm and Farmerstown offer genuine working-farm roadside stands with minimal commercial development.
Established retail shops — furniture stores, cheese houses, bulk food stores, and larger bakeries — generally operate year-round, though hours are reduced January through March. Seasonal farm stands typically close after Thanksgiving and reopen in April or May. All Amish businesses are closed on Sundays without exception. Call ahead in January and February as individual shops set their own off-season hours.
Ohio Amish country has a national reputation for hardwood furniture — oak, cherry, and maple pieces built in dozens of small workshops throughout Holmes and Wayne counties. Equally famous is the cheese: Heini's Cheese Chalet and Guggisberg Cheese (maker of the original Baby Swiss) are landmarks of American artisan cheesemaking. Freshly baked pies and bulk dry goods round out what most visitors take home.
It depends on the store type. Large tourist-facing operations typically accept cards. However, the majority of farm stands, home bakeries, and small bulk food stores operate cash-only. Plan to have $100–200 in cash before entering rural Holmes County.
