Illinois is home to approximately 9,000 Amish residents, with the majority concentrated in the east-central part of the state in Douglas and Moultrie counties. The Arthur and Arcola communities in Douglas County form the largest Amish settlement in Illinois and one of the most commercially developed Amish destinations in the Midwest, with a well-established network of stores, furniture shops, and bulk food operations. Arthur has been an Amish hub since the late 19th century, making it one of the older continuous Amish settlements in the United States.
Beyond the Arthur-Arcola corridor, smaller communities exist near Shelbyville in Shelby County, in parts of Ford and Livingston counties, and in scattered rural areas of central and southern Illinois.
The Arthur and Arcola corridor in Douglas County is the centerpiece of Illinois Amish country. Arthur alone has more than a dozen established shops including Beachy's Bulk Foods, Shady Crest Orchard and Bakery, multiple furniture stores, and several quilt shops. The town has invested in Amish-tourism infrastructure including a visitors center, wagon rides, and coordinated shopping maps. Arcola, five miles south, hosts country salvage stores where slightly irregular or surplus Amish-made goods are sold at discount.
The Arthur-Arcola area is compact enough that visitors can walk or drive between many shops in a single day without extensive planning.
Late spring through fall (May through October) is the optimal window for visiting the Arthur-Arcola area. The annual Illinois Amish Country Fall Festival in Arthur (typically held in September) brings additional vendors, demonstrations, and food offerings that make it the single best weekend of the year to visit. Summer is busy but manageable on weekdays; weekend crowds in July and August can make parking and shopping in Arthur's downtown area challenging.
The Arthur-Arcola Amish community is somewhat more accustomed to outside visitors than most Amish communities, given its long history as a regional shopping destination. Some shop owners are English (non-Amish) operators who sell Amish-made goods on behalf of community members, which means credit card acceptance and regular business hours are more common here. The Amish residents themselves remain Old Order in practice — horse-and-buggy transportation is standard on the county roads. Visitors should still follow standard respectful practices: ask before photographing, treat shops as businesses rather than exhibits.
