Kansas is home to approximately 7,000 Amish residents, making it one of the more substantial Amish states west of the Mississippi. The community is concentrated primarily in south-central Kansas, with the village of Yoder in Reno County standing out as one of the most visited Amish destinations in the entire country. Despite having a permanent population of fewer than 200 people, Yoder draws tens of thousands of visitors annually who come specifically to shop at Amish-owned businesses, eat at Carriage Crossing Restaurant, and experience a genuine working Amish community within easy driving distance of Wichita.
Beyond Yoder, Kansas Amish settlements extend through the Hutchinson area, the town of Haven to the southwest, and scattered rural communities in La Cygne and Pleasanton in Linn County in eastern Kansas. The flat, open landscape of central Kansas has proved well-suited to Amish agriculture, particularly wheat, sorghum, and large-scale vegetable production.
Kansas Amish communities have benefited from the state's affordable farmland and the longstanding infrastructure of small-town commerce. The Yoder area in particular has developed a cluster of businesses dense enough to occupy a full day of shopping and dining.
Yoder, Kansas functions as a genuine destination community in a way that few Amish villages outside of Ohio and Indiana can match. The commercial core includes Yoder Meats (custom-cut and aged beef, pork, and specialty cuts), Yoder Discount Grocery (bulk foods, baking supplies, snacks, and canned goods at below-retail prices), Carriage Crossing Restaurant (well-known for large portions of traditional American and Amish-influenced cooking, including homemade pies), and a cluster of quilt shops and craft operations within a short walk of each other.
The Haven and Hutchinson area communities, located nearby in Reno County, are more farm-focused and less commercial. Bulk food stores and harness shops serve both the local Amish population and outside visitors.
Spring and fall are the best seasons for visiting Yoder and the surrounding Kansas Amish communities. April through June brings mild temperatures before the intense summer heat of central Kansas, and September through October brings cooler weather and harvest-season produce. Summer visits are feasible but hot — temperatures regularly exceed 95°F in July and August. Carriage Crossing Restaurant and the main Yoder stores are open year-round. All Amish businesses are closed on Sundays.
Kansas Amish communities are predominantly Old Order, maintaining horse-and-buggy transportation and traditional dress. The Yoder community has navigated the challenge of high tourist traffic while preserving its identity — businesses are Amish-owned and operated, church services remain in homes, and the community's daily rhythms are not performative. Photography of community members is unwelcome; respecting this norm is essential.
